I was on a mastermind call last week and one of my accountability partners mentioned that in the midst of a revenue crunch, he was changing his approach. Instead of worrying about income goals, he would be focused instead on the value he provided.
As business owners we have to always be aware of the bottom-line. It’s not a business if it’s not about making money (and it won’t be around long if you don’t eventually make enough!).
But if that’s the only thing we think about, it can send us down a bad path.
Here’s why a value-added approach is important:
We Focus on Service
Getting paid is great. I love to get paid and it allows me to keep doing what I love to do. But the best way to get paid and keep getting paid is to do great work. I will focus on serving my clients needs and giving great value instead of counting dollars for hours of work.
We Focus on Quality
There’s a lot of junk out there. We buy a lot of it and it breaks or fails to do what it promises more often than not. I want to give my clients the best of what I have to offer. I want them to be blown away by the experience and the results that they get. It’s never perfect, but high quality means high value.
We Avoid a Scarcity Mentality
It’s easy to pursue any and every client opportunity when you’re desperate. But the truth is that what you offer is not always the best fit for every potential client you meet. Be selective, and if you aren’t a fit together, refer them to who you believe will be. And when in doubt, serve them well. Give them something of value, even if you don’t sell them a single thing. It can be as simple as a smile, some advice, your respect, and a little kindness. Don’t hold back.
I’m taking a very intentional approach to this during the month of August, and I want to invite you to be a part of the challenge.
Here’s how it works in two easy steps:
1) Serve Others (paid or not) and Add Value
2) Track Your Service and the Value Added
I want to see just how much value I can create, so I’m ramping up to serve as many people as I can. The first step is this short video introduction, along with an opportunity for free coaching with me to as many people as I have time to serve:
Let’s talk* and hopefully I can share something valuable to help you create more value for the people you serve: WoosleyCoaching.com/talk. We can discuss your business strategies, challenges and struggles, talk about my book, or just get to know each other a bit.
